Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has donated a suction machine for sewage cleaning to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s K West ward in Andheri on Saturday. Bachchan had made a promise to donate Rs 50 lakh towards buying mechanical equipment after he learned about the plight of manual scavengers during a television programme Swachh Bharat.
Bachchan had come to know the difficulty of manual cleaning of sewage and to prevent people from going down the manholes and sewer drain, he committed to providing mechanical equipment.
The veteran actor took to his Twitter handle to share the piece of information that while looking at the inhuman plight of the manual scavenger community, he had committed to buy 50 machines for them. On Monday, he fulfilled the promise by gifting as many as 25 small individual machines and a large truck machine to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
On Saturday, Amitabh Bachchan wrote to Manual Scavengers Association (MSA) and BMC saying that he wished to do something for their community that could prevent them from physically going down the sewer drain pipes and manholes.
He said that his contribution was to prevent the de-humanising job of these scavengers and to give them dignity and respect in society. He has reportedly also sought consistent reporting from the BMC and MSA on the correct and right usage of the equipment.
Apart from BMC, Bachchan also donated equipment to two scavengers to Aurangabad. He will give 26 mores such machines to Aurangabad scavengers.
