Rejuvenating the Kham river to build a sustainable environment in Aurangabad

Aurangabad , 08 June, 2021-Varroc Foundation, the CSR arm of Varroc Engineering Ltd. (Varroc), a global tier-I auto component group along with Confederation Of Indian Industry (CII), Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), EcoSattva environmental solutions, Aurangabad Cantonment Board, and the Aurangabad Smart City team has undertaken the restoration of Kham river in Aurangabad.

Varroc Foundation has been working towards ensuring environmental sustainability, ecological balance, protection of flora and fauna, animal welfare, agroforestry, conservation of natural resources, and maintaining the quality of soil, air, and water. The foundation has undertaken the restoration and cleaning of the Kham river for a 15 km distance. And over the last four years, has installed trappers for garbage, constructed and guarded the green bridge, and started the process of beautification along the riverside.

Recently, Varroc foundation along with EcoSattva has started the project for upstream interventions and building the Eco Park. This project will establish a systematic door-to-door collection of segregated waste and an effective waste recovery mechanism, which will achieve up to 90 per cent waste recovery in the city. This project aims to enhance the livelihood of local communities by promoting a clean and hygienic environment.

Additionally, about 20,000 saplings of 100 different species have been planted in the 14,000 sq. mtr. area along the river.

Commenting on the CSR project, Mr. Satish Mande, Head of Employee Relations, Varroc said, “Sustainability is a core goal for Varroc. This project restores and maintains the ecological and hydrological health of the Kham River. It further establishes local incentivization for the overall wellbeing of local communities. These attributes make the Kham River restoration seamlessly aligned to Varroc’s vision of sustainability.”

Further Mr. Astik Kumar Pandey, Municipal Commissioner, Aurangabad Municipal Corporation said, “All the project partners have come together, and the team has worked very well thus far. The extensive pitching, the EcoPark, and the planning for the underground systems are all solid work that has happened. of course, there is still a long way to go.

Adding to the same, Ms. Gauri Mirashi, Co-founder, EcoSattva said, “The KhamEcoPark is almost ready, the awareness and planning for solid waste pollution prevention are on-going in 5 wards, there are 25 more to go. With the steady leadership of the AMC and support of Varroc, we look forward to a restored seasonal Kham River in the long run.
