St. Jude opens its 42nd Centre for Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) pediatric patients in Mumbai

St. Judes India Childcare Centre has recently opened its 42nd BMT Centre in Mira Road Mumbai. This will manage 1000 families across 14 states in India. This Centre will extend free of cost holistic care and administration, as well as cover the accommodation of eight children being treated for Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) procedures at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s CTC, PHO & BMT Center. Their families too would be included in the accommodation.

The” Home Away from Home “concept of its previous centers and the holistic model of care is being carried forward in this newly opened facility as well. Each room is equipped with adequate storage facilities, sleeping arrangements for the children undergoing treatment and their family members. Keeping the high importance of nutrition in boosting the immunity of children who are undergoing cancer treatment, the shared kitchen is well equipped with utensils and kitchen equipment for the parents to cook meals as per their children’s requirements and tastes. Healthy rations and essential ingredients are replenished every week for the families. Infection control is maintained by hygienic toilets and well-maintained bathing areas in common bathrooms. The families receive transport facilities to travel from the centers to the hospitals where treatment is being offered. Counselling services that offer help with the psychological and emotional well being of the children and their parents are also extended.

Anil Nair, CEO, St. Judes India informs that BMT or Bone Marrow Transplant is a special therapy for patients suffering from certain cancers. The procedure involves transfusing healthy bone marrow cells into a person post their own unhealthy bone marrow is treated to kill the abnormal cells. A lot of care is needed by the patient, pre and post the BMT procedure. The centers offer holistic support in a bid to close the gap between what the hospital provides and what the children need to beat cancer.

The vision of St. Judes is to expand to Jaipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata apart from the 14 states of India that it plans to cover by 2025. The upcoming centers include – Kharghar in Mumbai, Wadala in Mumbai.  The Kharghar project which will be ready by 2024 will take care of 226 children. For Wadala the MoU has been signed for 2 centers near Wadala and will be ready by April 2023. The other plans encompass expanding the Delhi center and adding BMT units in the Chennai center.
