Prabh Aasra: A Lifelong Promise to the Helpless

Social responsibility initiative
Lifelong promise to the helpless

How often do we encounter elderly citizens, newborn infants, or mentally challenged individuals left entirely on their own—abandoned at railway stations, on pavements, or by the roadside? Invisible, vulnerable, and stripped of dignity. For S. Shamsher Singh and his wife, Bibi Rajinder Kaur, such sights were deeply distressing. Witnessing unclaimed human lives struggling in unsafe and unhealthy environments stirred their shared conscience and compelled them to act.

Together, Veer Ji and Bibi Rajinder Kaur ji tirelessly approached government departments, NGOs, and religious institutions, seeking shelter and basic facilities for these forgotten individuals. Despite numerous meetings and sincere efforts, meaningful support remained elusive. In a world increasingly focused on personal wellbeing, few couples possess the courage and conviction to shoulder responsibility for society’s most vulnerable—together, as equals in service.

By 2003, they realized that change would only come through direct action. Thus, was born Prabh Aasra—a sanctuary of compassion, dignity, and hope. Starting from a modest two-room rented accommodation in Chandigarh, S. Shamsher Singh and Bibi Rajinder Kaur opened their doors and their lives to the helpless, laying the foundation of what would become a remarkable humanitarian movement.

What began humbly soon transformed into a powerful institution. Today, Prabh Aasra operates three shelter-home campuses and a charitable multispecialty hospital. With the support of like-minded individuals, the couple also established a campus in Ganganagar district, Rajasthan, now successfully managed by trained local social workers inspired by their values and guidance.

Over the past 22 years, S. Shamsher Singh and Bibi Rajinder Kaur have touched thousands of lives—abandoned orphans, mentally and physically challenged individuals, and destitute senior citizens. Nearly 1,450 individuals have been reunited with their families after recovery and revival of mental health. Under Mission Milap, 2,250 people have been admitted, with 440 residents currently under continuous care and treatment as of January 2026.

Demonstrating deep social sensitivity, S. Shamsher Singh and Bibi Rajinder Kaur established an Infant Cradle at Prabh Aasra to prevent female foeticide and infanticide. So far, 24 unwanted babies have been received safely and anonymously, with Bibi Rajinder Kaur personally caring for them until all legal procedures are completed.

At Prabh Aasra, care extends far beyond food and shelter—it is rooted in dignity, compassion, and holistic wellbeing, values deeply nurtured by both hands-on involvement and maternal leadership. Children attend regular schools, while specially trained educators support children with special needs. Equal emphasis is placed on hygiene, nutrition, and comprehensive medical care. Since 2016, sports has been an integral part of rehabilitation at Prabh Aasra, driven by the personal vision and hands-on leadership of Bibi Rajinder Kaur Ji, who actively encourages and trains residents to build confidence, physical fitness, discipline, and social inclusion through sports. As the Senior Vice President, District Special Olympics Association, she has guided residents to participate at district, state, national, and international levels across multiple sports disciplines, winning numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals. A proud milestone was achieved when Mr. Amarjeet Singh, a resident of Prabh Aasra trained under her mentorship, won an international bronze medal at the Special Olympics 3×3 Unified Basketball World Cup held in San Juan, Puerto Rico (3–8 December 2025). Further strengthening Prabh Aasra’s global presence, Ms. Ramo Devi represented India at the Special Olympics Unified Volleyball World Cup 2025 in Katowice, Poland, securing an impressive 4th position, demonstrating how sports at Prabh Aasra transforms rehabilitation into empowerment and achievement.

Established in 2021, Prabh Aasra Hospital, envisioned and nurtured by both founders, stands as a charitable multispecialty healthcare institution committed to affordable and accessible treatment for all—especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. With 50 beds (soon expanding to 100), the hospital serves over 300 OPD patients daily, supported by 17 specialist doctors and surgeons, 4 EMOs, and 57 nursing and support staff. To date, the hospital has conducted over 15,000 medical procedures, including 2,775+ surgeries on non profit basis, Notably, for all Prabh Aasra inhabitants, every medical service—including consultations, diagnostic tests, treatments, and surgeries—is provided entirely free of cost, reflecting the founders’ unwavering commitment to compassionate and inclusive community healthcare.

Prabh Aasra’s humanitarian work extends far beyond institutional boundaries, serving nearby villages and districts through free medical camps, 11 ambulance services, and 7 body preservers for accident victims and unclaimed bodies.

Guided by the belief in dignity through self-reliance, residents receive vocational training in basic computer education, GDA courses, candle making, stitching, embroidery, knitting, and waste-reuse crafts.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Prabh Aasra supported thousands through ration distribution, masks, sanitizers, free ambulance services, and uninterrupted hospital care.

In September 2014, Prabh Aasra provided large-scale relief during the Srinagar floods, distributing over two truckloads of essential supplies. During the Tamil Nadu floods of December 2015, ambulances, medicines, and relief materials were swiftly deployed. Most recently, during the Punjab floods in August 2023 & August 2025, Prabh Aasra rescued over 3200+ families across 30+ villages using 5 rescue boats and 6 teams, followed by long-term recovery through farmland restoration, animal shelter rebuilding, and repair or reconstruction of 40+ homes.

Across pandemics, floods, and humanitarian crises, Prabh Aasra—under the leadership of S. Shamsher Singh and Bibi Rajinder Kaur—continue to save lives, restore dignity, and rebuild hope.
