Tamil Nadu is the 4th highest recipient state of CSR funds in India. The corporate sector is emerging as an important player in the development of CSR in Tamil Nadu. CSR funds have been invested in social development projects in Tamil Nadu, such as education, healthcare, and rural development. This aligns with the broader national trend of these three sectors being the top investment areas by corporates.
The top four CSR spending have been observed by companies like Neyvelli Lignite Corporation, BHEL, MRF, and Sun TV Network in the state over the years. BFSI and Manufacturing are the sectors with the highest contributions.
NLC India Ltd
NLC India Ltd. is a pioneer in open-cast mining and a Major Indian Non-State Player in the Lignite Mining and Power Generation Business. NLCI views its business as an opportunity to set up the mechanisms for sustainable socioeconomic development of its operating regions and contribute to nationbuilding efforts. NLCI’s business strategies are closely linked to its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
NLCI’s CSR is aimed at Human Development through innovative approaches and measurable social impacts. NLCI adopts a Holistic Approach to achieving Inclusive Growth in its operating regions by formulating and implementing projects, programs and activities to benefit neighbourhoods in the focus areas of Rural Infrastructure, Water, Health, Education and Capacity Building / Skill Development, etc., with continued social impacts. NLCI has been taking up various CSR projects/activities for the benefit of inhabitants of neighbouring village�s right from its inception and has adopted a fullfledged CSR policy since 2009.
BHEL
BHEL’s Mission Statement on CSR is “Be a Committed Corporate Citizen, alive towards its Corporate Social Responsibility”. Through this, the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) emerged, paving the way for businesses to return to society from the profits they earn. Such initiatives on the part of a company to improve people’s livelihood and preserve the environment of its operations also go a long way in gathering acceptance from local communities.
BHEL’s contributions towards Corporate Social Responsibility to date include the adoption of villages, organising free medical camps/ supporting charitable dispensaries, schools for the underprivileged and handicapped children, providing aid during disasters/natural calamities, providing employment to handicapped and Ex-serviceman, rainwater harvesting, plantation of millions of trees, energy saving and conservation of natural resources through environmental management. We have identified eight key thrust areas under which the CSR activities are carried out at BHEL.
MRF
MRF, as part of CSR, undertakes projects in the following focus areas: Training to promote nationally recognised sports (including cricket), Livelihood enhancement including driver training, Poverty alleviation.
Promotion of education, Promoting health care including preventive health care and sanitation, Rural development, Environmental sustainability and conserving natural resources, Providing drinking water, Disaster Management.
