Sunbird Trust and NTT DATA Join Forces to Enhance Sanitation Facilities for Students on Majuli Island, Assam

16th December 2024: In a significant step towards ensuring child-friendly hygiene and sanitation facilities for educational institutions in remote areas of Assam, Sunbird Trust, with financial support from NTT DATA, a global leader in digital business and IT services, has enhanced sanitation facilities in schools on Majuli Island, Assam. The collaboration has led to the construction of restroom facilities at Berbhanga Friendship School in Dhemaji District and Ecoland Academy on Majuli Island, ensuring safe and hygienic restroom access for over 180 students and 24 staff members yearly.

Before this initiative, students relied on makeshift washroom facilities built from tin sheets and bamboo partitions, which offered minimal privacy and limited hygiene standards. These temporary structures posed health risks and created challenges, especially for girls, impacting attendance and well-being. The newly constructed sanitation blocks, made of brick with stable roofing and plumbing, address these issues by offering clean, private, and accessible restroom facilities for the school community.

An inauguration ceremony held on school grounds celebrated the completion of the project, with [Name to be added] attending as Chief Guest and emphasizing the importance of sanitation for student health and community well-being. Teachers, students, and local dignitaries were in attendance, and students added a festive touch with vibrant cultural performances of traditional dances and songs.

“Access to quality education and healthcare can have a profound impact on young lives, especially in remote communities like Majuli Island. Through this partnership with Sunbird Trust, we hope to contribute towards creating safe and hygienic school environments, helping young minds focus on their learning and growth. Quality education access remains a key focus for NTT DATA, guided by the belief that every child deserves the chance to build a brighter future,” said Gauri Bahulkar, Senior Director of Global Corporate Social Responsibility, at NTT DATA.

“By Partnering with Sunbird Trust, NTT DATA has not only supported our vision of creating Peace Through Education but also recognized the critical requirement of basic sanitation facilities at our partner schools in Majuli Island. The hygienic sanitation facilities constructed at two of our partner schools by NTT DATA will not only provide a dignified & safe space to our students and staff but also have a positive impact on their mental & physical health. This will enable them to focus on learning outcomes and growth.” said Aliasgar Janjali, Chief Executive Officer, at Sunbird Trust.

This collaboration between Sunbird Trust and NTT DATA exemplifies the positive impact of partnerships in creating sustainable changes in underprivileged communities.  Sensitivity Label: General
