The future of the world is in my classroom today” these words of Ivan Welton Fitzwater accurately portray the importance of education in our society. But what if there is no classroom – a scenario that many of the blessed soul do not identify with and a scenario not very difficult to find in semi urban and rural India. The lack of basic infrastructure cripple education delivery in many schools particularly in semi urban and rural area. Ensuring enhancement of education remains a critical challenge.

Mahanagar Gas Limited has identified Education as one key theme for facilitation of vertical socio-economic mobility. With the objective of investing in future Mahanagar Gas Limited has initiated various projects for advancement of the cause of education.

Construction of classroom blocks and toilet block in Govt. School in village Nagaon was initiated by Mahanagar Gas Limited. The school had reported dearth of classroom which hampers the quality of education. The classroom block and toilet block will reduce the stress on the current infrastructure of the school. The infrastructure may also have cascading effect on enhancement of overall enrollment rate and reduction in dropout rate. Lack of proper sanitation facility in the school is often linked with high dropout rates for girls. Mahanagar Gas Limited is also facilitating construction of toilet block in Raigad Zilla Parishad School, Chowk.

Mini Science Centers focusses on enabling children do and in the process understand science rather than learn and memorize. The science centre comprises of 60 table top models / exhibits that enable the students and teachers to correlate theoretical science with practical explanation. The centre assists in generating curiosity of the students towards science. This also enables children to seek scientific explanation to daily activities and observation thus inculcating an inclination towards understanding science. MGL has installed 5 such science centers .

The centre in deviation with the general practices through which science is taught in India; which is mostly text book centered incorporates a learning by doing things. The text book centered inputs enables students to simply associate the questions about the phenomenon with a word or phrase without understanding conceptually the interactions involved. Science education, even at its best, develops competence but does not encourage ingenuity and creativity. Mini Science Centre is an initiative to supplement text books by providing models in the hands of students to explore and understand the concepts clearly.

Mahanagar Gas Limited has installed computer laboratories in 2 MCGM Schools in Mumbai. MGL has also been extending the support of a computer instructor to facilitate utilization of the laboratories.

Mahanagar Gas Limited is supporting operations of 8 balwadis for children of sex workers in Parbhani, Jalna and Nanded Districts of Maharashtra. These balwadis will cater to nearly 400 toddlers who are exposed to myriad vulnerabilities. The mainstream society often excludes them debarring them of a normal growth trajectory. The domestic setting is also not conducive for the child. The visitors are often abusive, the neighbourhood rough and the society at large not bothered. The children particularly at early age start developing a tough exterior for the lack of inclusion and grooming thereby killing the innocence of kids.

Through the Balwadi intervention MGL seeks to groom the children at an early age and enable their further development.

MGL MUSKAAN— Project MGL Muskaan being supported by Mahanagar Gas Limited is an education centric slum community empowerment initiative.
