Skilling the Youth for a Water-Secure Nation: WABAG’s Model for Sustainable Workforce Development

Sustainable workforce development

As India advances toward inclusive growth and environmental resilience, the demand for a skilled workforce in the water sector has taken centre stage. VA Tech WABAG Limited, a global pure-play water technology multinational, has embedded this priority into its Corporate Social Responsibility framework through structured, impactful and scalable youth skilling initiatives.

WABAG’s CSR philosophy is grounded in outcome-driven, nation-building programmes rather than expenditure-led compliance. Since 2001, and in alignment with the CSR legislation introduced in 2014, the company has focused on initiatives that strengthen communities and support India’s long-term development agenda. Central to this approach is WABAG’s flagship Skill Development Programme, delivered under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS).

In FY 2024–25, WABAG recruited over 116 graduate and diploma engineering trainees from across India, spanning regions from Jammu and Kashmir to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Over the past three years, more than 225 youth, many from partly privileged and underprivileged backgrounds, have undergone immersive training in water and wastewater engineering, project execution, O&M operations and digital utility management. These trainees benefit from hands-on exposure at live project sites, industry-focused technical learning, digital skill development and behavioural and corporate readiness modules.

WABAG allocated INR 3.75 crores in FY 2024–25 toward these skilling initiatives, achieving a trainee representation of over 10 percent, significantly surpassing the Government of India’s expectation of 2.5 percent. With nearly 40 percent women participation, the programme is consciously designed to be inclusive, equitable and future-focused.

Aligned with AMRIT KAAL Vision 2047 and the Viksit Bharat agenda, WABAG’s skilling initiatives strengthen pillars such as employability, innovation, sustainability and social empowerment. Trainees gain exposure to advanced areas including desalination, water reuse, wastewater recycling, industrial water treatment, circular economy principles and smart digital water systems. Beyond technical competence, participants also engage in community outreach and environmental sensitisation, nurturing a sense of responsibility towards conservation and sustainable practices.

WABAG’s efforts were recently recognised at the CSR Times Awards 2025, where the organisation received the Gold Award under the Industry Partnership Model in Skill Development. Presented by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon. Minister for Road Transport and Highways, this honour marks WABAG’s first national recognition in the skill development domain, reinforcing the impact and relevance of its NATS and NAPS-based programmes.

More than a training initiative, WABAG’s Skill Development Programme is a socio-economic enabler that builds capability, confidence and consciousness among India’s youth, empowering the next generation of water professionals to support a more resilient and water-secure future.
