25 October, 2023: Ek Kadam Aur Foundation (EKAF) a nonprofit organization is organizing a conference titled “Prevention and Treatment of Visual Challenges and Educating Children and Adults with Blindness” at the Shangri-La- Hotel Connaught Place New Delhi. This conference is scheduled from the 30-31 October 2023. It will aim to promote awareness about the challenges of visual impairment in India. During the two-day global conference, the prevention, treatment and education of children and adults with blindness will be the primary focus.
Insights on this issue and the roadmap to help children with blindness to develop life skills and acquire training to be school ready will be shared by experts. These experts will be from India, Australia, Mauritius, Ireland and the US.
The Ek Kadam Aur Foundation will during this conference, host experts and professionals from diverse fields such as visual impairment, ophthalmology, optometry, education, technology, and rehabilitation. Over 200 people will participate in this conference. Experts from nonprofit, medical education, pharmaceutical, research, corporate and government departments will also feature in the list of participants.
Founder and Director of Ek Kadam Aur Foundation, Dr Satish Tripathi said that the aim of the conference was to share the latest research, best practices and innovations in the field. It would also foster a collaboration among participants to improve the quality of life of children who were faced with visual challenges. This event, he said would promote greater awareness, understanding and support for those individuals who were blind or visually impaired and empower them to lead a fulfilling and productive life. He was hopeful that the deliberations by eminent experts in the field and the discussions among the participants would make the event a meaningful platform where they could strategize ways to combat eye ailments effectively.
Dr Tripathi went on to add that India had 320,000 blind children a majority of whom lived in remote areas. Extreme poverty, prevents children with blindness in the remotest parts of the country from accessing rehabilitation program or quality education.
In a survey that was conducted by NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training), it was revealed that only 29.16 per cent of children suffering from blindness received education, and the dropout rate was very high. The conference will address these concerns collectively and stive towards building an inclusive society that extends equal opportunities to all.
Shilpa Shanker Narain, a classical musical performer and children with blindness studying under the Arunodaya (Sunrise) for Blind program of the Ek Kadam Aur Foundation will be showcasing their talent and performing at the conference.
