27th March 2024 – As the global community commemorates World Meteorological Day, SEEDS emerges as a beacon of proactive climate action, aligning with this year’s theme, “At the Frontline of Climate Action.” In the backdrop of India’s climate challenges, particularly the escalating heatwaves gripping cities like Delhi, SEEDS’ innovative initiatives underscore the urgent need for resilience-building measures.
Delhi’s climate, known for its extremes, poses significant challenges, especially during the scorching summer months when temperatures soar to alarming levels. In response to this crisis, SEEDS has launched a groundbreaking initiative in the Kishan Kunj area of East Delhi. Through the installation of thermal roofing in 139 households and the establishment of two water stations, SEEDS has significantly improved local living conditions, mitigating the adverse effects of extreme heat.
SEEDS’ impact extends beyond infrastructure improvements. The organization has conducted 415 awareness and training sessions, empowering community members, school children, and key stakeholders to better understand and respond to heatwave conditions. Moreover, SEEDS’ “Beat the Heat” competition has garnered over 14,000 entries, showcasing creative and cost-efficient solutions devised by community members, such as lining roofs with millet seeds or jute sacks to reduce indoor temperatures.
Arijit Das, Senior Director of Fundraising & Advocacy at SEEDS, emphasized the organization’s commitment to building resilience and fostering harmony between communities and nature. “Each step we take towards sustainability is a step towards a resilient and hopeful future,” Das stated, highlighting SEEDS’ dedication to reaching 315 million people in high-risk areas across India by 2030.
SEEDS’ approach exemplifies the power of collective action and community involvement in combating climate challenges. Volunteers, including community women, ASHA, and Anganwadi workers, are at the forefront of SEEDS’ efforts, leading a movement to mitigate indoor heat distress, particularly among vulnerable populations.
