May 29, 2023 : In a recently introduced new initiative, the two European production units of Apollo Tyres in the Netherlands and Hungary will incorporate significant changes. These changes are in accordance with Apollo Tyres’ Global Sustainability Strategy. Adhering to the code of conduct set out by GPSNR or the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber, Apollo tyres is now sourcing 100 % natural rubber supplies for its’ European production facilities from companies that have committed to sustainability throughout their supply chain. Sustainable natural rubber will be used in the production of all Apollo and Vredestein branded tyres in Europe.
As part of this policy, new natural rubber supply agreements have been initiated with businesses that have traceable-to-plantation policies or have sustainable sourcing.
Resting on the fulcrum of sustainability all tyres being produced at the company’s European facilities, will now only be made of natural rubber from companies that avoid unsustainable practices, and will not have a trickle down negative impact on the environment. This is a beneficial step bearing a positive impact on human rights, wildlife, climate and the local economy.
Benoit Rivallant, President and CEO of Apollo Tyres Europe, commenting on the rise in global demand for tyres, propelled by the growth in automobile sales and the increase in ride hailing services, said it was imperative for the company and its’ suppliers to grow together in a sustainable manner. He further added that natural rubber was an environment friendly raw material only if it was sourced sustainably. He upheld the importance of total transparency in the company’s work ethos which in turn would help the tyre industry manage its environmental and societal impacts.
The company has recently secured ISO 20400 certification for sustainable procurement.
