Project Saksham was carried out from July 2022 till March 2023, over a period of 9 months.

The core objective of the Saksham financial literacy project is to impart basic financial education among marginalized women & girls in order to further their empowerment and facilitate their informed financial decisions.

The Saksham project had nearly 30,000 women participants which included girl students, maids, homemakers, and daily wage earners.  There were 605 financial literacy workshops conducted mainly in the North covering – Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR and Rajasthan, In the West covering Maharashtra and the East covering West Bengal and Bihar.

This project was included under the Financial Literacy Program under NEP implemented since 2020 since it covered 30% girl students over the age of 15 years.

Ashish Tiwari, Chief Marketing Officer, Home Credit India, commenting on the success of Saksham said that in India and globally financial literacy was far behind general literacy and for women, it was at dismal levels. At Home Credit India Financial literacy was one of the key ESG pillars and they were working towards promoting it. The thrust was on developing a “responsible borrowing culture” in society.

The curriculum at Saksham’s financial literacy workshop covered topics like savings, investment planning, budgeting and credit worthiness.

Dr. Narayan Iyer, CEO, IDF, speaking on the project implementation aspect said that with the government’s focus on financial inclusion in the country financial literacy has assumed a lot of importance. He said that they had started financial education from the bottom of the society by choosing marginalized women for this.
