NHPC is committed to inclusive and sustainable development through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in and around its Projects, Power Stations and Units, as well as in other parts of the country. As India’s premier hydropower development organization, NHPC goes beyond power generation by supporting CSR initiatives that improve the quality of life of communities and contribute to national development.

NHPC’s CSR & Sustainability Policy is aligned with Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, the Companies (Corporate Social Responsibility Policy) Rules, 2014 and subsequent amendments issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. NHPC also aims to adhere to the Guidelines on CSR issued by the Department of Public Enterprises.

The scale and geographical spread of NHPC’s CSR initiatives are significant. Over the past 12 years, NHPC has spent nearly ₹1004 crore on CSR initiatives across India, benefiting communities in several States and Union Territories.

NHPC’s CSR initiatives cover areas specified in Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013. Education is one of NHPC’s key CSR focus areas. NHPC is supporting 12 Kendriya Vidyalayas and one DAV school near its Projects, Power Stations and Units, benefiting children from rural communities. NHPC has also contributed ₹ 62.50 crore towards the establishment of the Government Hydro Engineering College at Bandla, Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. It further supports school infrastructure, hostels, digital learning and vocational training in rural and remote areas. NHPC is also supporting the transformation of the District Library in Varanasi at an estimated cost of ₹20 crore and the construction of a 360-seated Girls’ Hostel at Rairangpur Women’s College, Mayurbhanj District, Odisha, at an estimated cost of ₹10.23 crore.

Promoting Healthcare, including preventive healthcare, is another important area of NHPC’s CSR efforts. NHPC provides free healthcare services to the local population through its project dispensaries, particularly in remote areas, and also supports healthcare infrastructure, including the provision of aids and assistive devices to Divyangjans. During COVID-19 pandemic, NHPC contributed ₹100 crore to the PM CARES Fund, supplied cold-chain equipment and supported the installation of oxygen generation plants.

NHPC’s CSR initiatives also stress on safe drinking water, sanitation, rural development, environmental sustainability, women empowerment, sports and disaster relief. Through these initiatives, NHPC addresses diverse community needs, particularly in remote and difficult terrains.

NHPC remains committed to sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development through impactful CSR initiatives. Through responsible interventions, NHPC continues to improve the quality of life of communities, contribute to nation-building and support the social and economic empowerment of people across the country.
