Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has announced that it will make its entire value chain climate-neutral by the year 2050. As an industry forerunner, this Flavors & Fragrance business unit is all set to offer sustainable product variants for its entire portfolio comprising preservatives, flavors, fragrances, and animal nutrition products by 2023-year end. The vital products of this business unit include its’ preservatives Kalaguard and Purox, and the flavors and fragrances under the brand umbrella, Kalama and Purolan.

This he says is also driving the customers to achieve their own sustainability goals.

This portfolio shift is in keeping with and necessitated by the increasing accent on sustainability manufactured products in the market. The past five years have witnessed double the share of sustainably certified products in all new registrations in the personal care and home care sector which has reached 22 percent in 2022. With a focus on supplying sustainable raw materials and stepping towards green energy, the business has signed up for strategic collaborations with key suppliers. An alternative to the use of crude oil derivatives is offered through circular and bio-based raw materials. These raw materials through the use of renewable energy also reduce the carbon footprint. Sustainable electrolysis products are an integral part too.

A strong focus is maintained by LANXESS on certified materials that are in keeping with the ISCC PLUS mass balance approach when its production facilities use sustainable raw materials. The company’s production facility is switching to sustainable energy. New supply contracts for green electricity for the Botlek (Netherlands) and Krefeld-Uerdingen sites feature in the new supply contracts for green electricity of the Flavors & Fragrances business unit. Electricity and steam are now generated from biomass in Nagda (India), Since its foundation in 2021, after further measures have been taken for process optimization and residue recycling there has been a significant drop in the CO2e emissions of the entire business unit by more than a third. The drop recorded is from about 360,000 tonnes to around 230,000 tonnes annually. There are more projects in the pipeline too.

The ISCC PLUS certification is planned for all its five production sites. This certification is already awarded to the sites at Nagda (India) Krefeld- Uerdingen (Germany) and Botlek (Netherlands) are already certified. It is projected that the sites in Kalama (USA) and Widnes (England) will follow by mid-2023.
